International Organization for Migration

Mission:
To meet the growing operational challenges of migration management, advance understanding of migration issues, encourage social and economic development through migration, and uphold the human dignity and well-being of migrants.

Background:
The International Organization for Migration was established in 1951 to resettle displaced European persons, refugees, and migrants. The organization now has offices and operations on every continent and helps governments provide humane responses to migration challenges. In recent months, IOM has helped more than 1,000 migrant workers who fled Iraq because of the hostilities return to their home countries, mainly Sudan and Egypt. The organization is currently designing a major program to address migration needs in Iraq.

Outstanding Feature:
IOM has created a Web-based, multimedia reporting system to enhance delivery of migration services to third country nationals, refugees, asylum seekers, and others displaced by the conflict in Iraq. The new information system, the Collaborative Humanitarian Analysis and Reporting Tool (CHART), provides a window onto what is happening on the ground at a given place and time. A password-protected site, CHART allows IOM operations staff to improve delivery of services and share information with partners in real time. Developed by Boeing, the site features National Geographic maps for tracking activities and identifying locations. Web users can learn more about CHART and IOM's Global Data Information Program by viewing the project's online tutorial.
