ioby
Mission:
To connect donors and volunteers with nearby community improvement projects that inspire new environmental knowledge and action.
Background:
With support from local and national foundations and corporations, ioby (which stands for "in our backyards") enables anyone to invest in and/or jump-start local environmental projects. The online platform was launched in 2008 by Cassie Flynn, Brandon Whitney, and Erin Barnes, New York City residents who were working to create environmental change in the city by cleaning up lots, planting trees and gardens, and bringing fresh produce to neighborhoods in need. Eventually, the trio saw the need for an online hub where they could share information about their projects, find supporters, and engage new volunteers. In April, the project expanded to all regions of the United States.
Outstanding Web Features:

Each project page includes a detailed description of the host organization, project, and financial and volunteer needs. The site also offers an blog; answers to FAQand an impact dashboarddetailing the organization's progress.
