Loveisrespect.org
Mission:
To provide a safe outlet where teenagers can discuss their fears about an abusive dating relationship anonymously and confidentially.
Background:
Launched in February 2007, Loveisrespect.org, the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline, is a national 24-hour Web-based service that provides help to teenagers dealing with dating abuse. The service provides teens, their parents, teachers, law enforcement officers, and other concerned adults information and advice from trained peer or young adult advocates as well as one-on-one support via a secure Web site or toll-free telephone number: (866) 331-9474. Funded in part by the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation and Liz Claiborne Inc., the helpline is operated by the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
Outstanding Web Features:
The site builds on the traditional telephone helpline model to engage teenagers with technology they frequently use. Peer advocates lead live one-on-one chats daily between 4:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., CST. Visitors to the site will find an abuse checklist, a Teen Dating Bill of Rights, tips on how to break up with an abusive boyfriend or girlfriend, and PSAs. The site also provides information on how to support a friend or one's child in an abusive situation and how to talk to or get help for an abusive teen. Loveisrespect.org also features a blog and maintains profiles on the MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter networks.
