Online Computer Library Center

Online Computer Library Center

Mission:
To improve access to the world's information and reduce library costs by offering services for libraries and their users.

Background:
The Online Computer Library Center evolved out of the Ohio College Library Center, which was established in 1967 to develop a computerized system enabling academic institutions in the state to share resources and reduce costs. Now known as the Online Computer Library Center, the group is a nonprofit, service and research organization with more than 57,000 member libraries in 112 countries and territories. Membership in OCLC provides libraries access to a wide range of services and databases, including WorldCat, the OCLC Online Union Catalog. Together, OCLC member libraries make up the world's largest consortium.

Outstanding Web Features:
OCLC's community section includes the organization's newsletter, NextSpace, membership reports, career development, presentations, and information on advocacy and activities. In addition, OCLC provides a librarian's toolbox, Web sessions, product updates, and a list of participating OCLC libraries.
