Oxfam America

Oxfam America

Mission: To create lasting solutions to global poverty, hunger, and social injustice.

Background:
The name "Oxfam" was the original postal abbreviation for the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, started in 1942 by Quakers, social activists, and academics in England in response to the plight of refugees in Greece during World War II. Since then, related organizations have been established in twelve countries. Oxfam America, founded in 1970 in response to the humanitarian crisis in Bangladesh, is an international development and relief agency and an affiliate of Oxfam International. Working with local partners, it delivers development programs and emergency relief services, and campaigns for change in global practices and policies that keep people in poverty. Its advocacy, public education, and emergency assistance programs address social injustice worldwide.

Outstanding Web Features:
The Oxfam America Web site supplies a map showing areas where the organization works, the issues it addresses, current campaigns, and news and publications. The holiday gift center provides ideas for socially responsible gifts, including those available through Oxfam that may be given in the name of a loved one, with accompanying e-cards.
