Paul G. Allen Family Foundation
Mission: To transform lives and strengthen communities by fostering innovation, creating knowledge, and promoting social progress.
Background:
When Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen and his family created Vulcan Inc. in Seattle in 1986, the first order of business was to establish a foundation to address some of the needs they saw in the Pacific Northwest. This year, the foundation reconfigured its program structure to emphasize measurable success in four areas: nurturing the arts and cultural endeavors; engaging children more deeply in the learning process; responding to the needs of vulnerable populations; and advancing scientific and technological knowledge of the universe.
Outstanding Web Features:
The Allen Family Foundation Web site contains descriptions of its four program areas. The arts and culture program fosters creativity and supports projects featuring innovative, diverse artistic forms, with emphasis on contemporary, experimental ideas and those that address social, political, and cultural issues. Funding priorities within the program are artistic venture projects, investments in effective organizations, and public-private initiatives. Other program areas are youth engagement, community development and social change, and scientific and technological innovation. The Web site also provides specifics on the foundation's grantmaking process and eligibility requirements, grantee case studies, a grant list, and answers to frequently asked questions.
