Preservation Play
Mission: To direct advertising revenue from relaxing nature videos on YouTube to charities that look after the natural world.
Background: Preservation Play is an initiative of the London-based digital innovation agency R/GA designed to use relaxing nature videos to provide YouTube ad revenue for NGOs focused on the environment, such as Project Zero, which works to establish ocean sanctuaries that provide climate change resiliency. Throughout 2020, R/GA saw charities and NGOs hit hard by the pandemic, with donations declining and government grants diverted to COVID-19 relief efforts; at the same time, the agency saw an increase in searches for nature videos that help viewers relax, sleep, or be more productive. Preservation Play helps redirect future income to conservation organizations by directing ad revenue generated from videos specifically made for the initiative to environmental NGOs. The agency also plans to share insights gained from the initiative so that viewers can see the impact they and others are making.
Outstanding Web Features: The Preservation Play homepage introduces the initiative, discusses the project's goals, and features some of the channel's popular videos and serves as a directory of upcoming videos, including those that benefit rain forests and Australian wildlife. The videos tab allows visitors to see all videos cataloged on the channel with an option to "play all" or sort by most popular, oldest, or newest. Visitors can then check out created playlists, subscribe, and see other related channels or join discussions when available. In addition, Preservation Play is looking for more NGOs and encourages interested parties to contact the organizers directly.
