Project ALERT

Project ALERT

Mission:
To provide educators with a skills-based substance-abuse prevention curriculum for middle grade students and the support to implement it.

Background:
The Project ALERT drug prevention program provides educators with online training, fourteen lesson plans, eight interactive student videos in DVD or VHS formats, twelve posters, toll-free phone support and technical assistance, unlimited online access to resources and refresher training, and an "e-code" for free online sharing with colleagues. The training is overseen by the BEST Foundation, a nonprofit that provides schools and their community partners with the information, materials, and guidance they need to implement the project effectively. Both the project and the BEST Foundation are supported by grants from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Project Alert is fee-based; however, its Web site features many free, useful resources.

Outstanding Web Features:
The colorful Project ALERT site contains previews of curriculum elements, including a flash online learning demo, a downloadable lesson plan, and samples of posters and videos; a program overview (22 pages, PDF); and case studies. The site also offers assessment tools, research, resources, and The Alert Educator newsletter (12 pages, PDF). The Teacher Corner provides handouts for students in English and Spanish as well as drug use statistics, and other materials.
