Public Interest Registry

Public Interest Registry

Mission:
To manage the dot-org domain in an exemplary manner, educating and empowering the global noncommercial community to utilize the Internet more effectively, and taking a leadership position among Internet stakeholders on registry management and related policy issues on behalf of the dot-org community.

Background:
The nonprofit Public Interest Registry has administered the dot-org top-level domain (TLD) and maintained the database of all .org Internet addresses since 2003, connecting individuals surfing the Web to the sites they seek. The third largest TLD after dot-com and dot-net, dot-org is the Internet home of noncommercial organizations — nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, philanthropies, charities, religious organizations, educational and cultural institutions, arts organizations, sports clubs, and other groups. According to PIR, most Internet users associate dot-org Web sites with nonprofit organizations.

Outstanding Web Features:
This easy-to-navigate site is rich in resources for Web users, including guidelines for building a Web site or Web log and online-fundraising tips. For less Web-savvy users, the site offers information on how the Web works. The site also provides reports, e-newsletters, and information about PIR advocacy efforts. And the dot-orgs to Watch page also allows visitors to recommend sites for the feature.
