San Francisco Classical Voice
Mission:
To inspire and motivate people to attend, listen to, learn about, discuss, and actively participate in the Bay Area's classical music scene.
Background:
In 1998, retiring San Francisco Chronicle classical music critic Robert Commanday and local composer and philanthropist Gordon Getty launched San Francisco Classical Voice, a nonprofit Web site dedicated to intelligent, professional, and thorough critical coverage of the rich classical music scene in the Bay Area. Against a backdrop of declining support for conventional arts journalism, the site has embraced Web 2.0 tools to provide resources for classical music lovers, including more than thirty-five hundred concert reviews of classical music groups in the area.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to site can listen to and download a wide variety of classical music pieces; browse news, reviews, and feature articles; and participate in the SFCV forum. The site also offers helpful resources for individuals new to the world of classical music and a comprehensive calendar of classical music events around the Bay Area.
