Toolkit for Veteran Friendly Institutions

Toolkit for Veteran Friendly Institutions

Mission:
To help colleges and universities build effective programs and services for their students who are also veterans.

Background:
Created by the American Council on Education with support from the Kresge Foundation, the Toolkit for Veteran Friendly Institutions provides a collaborative space where institutions of higher education working to build programs for veteran students can share information with campus leadership and faculty; student affairs, veterans affairs, financial aid, and career counseling staff; federal, state, and local governments; and supporters such as veteran service and other nonprofit organizations. The site highlights a number of best practices, including veterans-specific orientation programs, on-campus veterans service centers, outreach efforts, faculty training, and counseling.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can browse tips and video clips related to creating a successful program, admissions and financial aid, academic services, student services, and campus life; join a discussion on those topics; or view profiles of student veterans across the United States. Shared resources, toolkit site content, and discussions can be searched and/or filtered by keyword, issue, institution characteristics, and state. In addition, college and university administrators can learn more about how to get involved and/or register to become a participating institution, share their experiences, and contribute to the toolkit.
