Understood
Mission:
To provide parents whose children are struggling with learning and attention issues with the knowledge they need to make effective choices that help their children thrive.
Background:
Launched by fifteen nonprofit organizations, Understood works to support parents of children with learning and attention issues — which affect one in every five children — with state-of-the-art technology, personalized resources, free daily access to experts, a secure online community, and practical tips. The founding partners include Benetech, the National Center for Learning Disabilities, the Parents Education Network, and the Emily Hall Tremaine, Oak, and Poses Family foundations.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can read about the types of learning and attention issues and their signs and symptoms, as well as treatments and approaches; and/or browse resources about managing challenges that arise from learning and attention issues in the context of school and learning, friends and feelings, and family. The "Parent Toolkit" includes simulations and videos, expert-approved games and apps, and a "Parenting Coach" that lets users filter advice by issue and age. Visitors to the site also can follow multiple blogs, learn about upcoming events and webinars, join a parents' group, and/or take action to advocate for education, healthcare, and other policies that support children with learning and attention issues. The site also is available in Spanish.
