American Promise
Mission:
To empower boys, their parents, caregivers, and educators to help close the black male achievement gap.
Background:
Part of a campaign based on American Promise, an award-winning 2013 documentary about two African-American boys enrolled in a prestigious private school in New York City, the site offers information about screenings of the film during "Black Male Achievement Week" (February 3-7, 2014); discussion guides; and other resources designed to support the academic, social, and emotional success of boys of color. A co-production of the Rada Film Group, Independent Television Service, and POV's Diverse Voices Project, the film — which was funded in part by the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program and Fund, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Ford, MacArthur, and Jerome foundations — explores issues of race, class, and opportunity as well as the many challenges that middle-class black boys face, and calls on educational institutions to critically examine their approach to young men of color.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can watch a trailer for the film, look up screening dates in their community, learn how to host a screening, access the POV discussion guide, and/or sign up to receive a campaign-related e-newsletter. Visitors also can download resources designed for parents, educators, and student/youth groups — including video clips about various parenting topics, tools for teaching tolerance, and video workshops. Parents also can connect with local Promise Clubs, groups of parents who meet on a regular basis to support one another as they work to empower their own children to achieve success, or download the Promise Tracker, a soon-to-be-launched app designed to help parents and caregivers set and monitor goals for their children.
