Women and Girls Lead

Mission:
To address the opportunity gap that confronts women and girls around the globe.

Background:
Launched in 2011 by the Independent Television Service in partnership with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS, Women and Girls Lead is a strategic public media campaign designed to celebrate, educate, and activate women, girls, and their allies across the globe to address the challenges of the twenty-first century. In collaboration with NGOs, public television, and media partners, the campaign uses documentary films to showcase extraordinary women and girls who are changing the world, engage audiences, and inspire activities that promote leadership development, violence prevention, and economic empowerment of and for women.

Launched in September 2012 by the United States Agency for International Development, the Ford Foundation, ITVS, and CARE, Women and Girls Lead Globalis a three-year, nine-country media initiative to create a ten-episode documentary film series annually.

Outstanding Web Features:
During the month of March (Women's History Month), WGL's #SheDocs Online Film Festivalis streaming ten documentary films for free, including Chahinaz: What Rights for Women? and Women, War & Peace. Visitors to the site also can browse a film archive, check for upcoming television broadcasts, and watch short video pieces featuring global leaders and luminaries who support the campaign. The site also offers a range of resources related to the campaign, including film discussion guides and educational materials, as well as resources focused on Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a television documentary inspired by the book of the same title written by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn; a listing of upcoming events; and information for individuals who want to get involved.
