Working Films
Mission:
To advance social, economic, environmental, and racial justice by linking independent media to activism.
Background:
Co-founded by Robert West and Judith Helfand in 1999, Working Films brings documentary filmmakers together with organizers and educators who share a passion for social justice. The organization's programs include rough-cut community feedback screenings, outreach strategies for documentary filmmakers, and collaborations between filmmakers and organizers. To date, Working Films has organized more than four hundred national media outreach programs, offering free consultations to independent filmmakers and community organizers on how films can inspire civic action.
Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the Working Films Web site can search films and projects by subject or keyword. Each film or project has a profile page, which includes a trailer of the documentary, a list of upcoming screenings, links to related films, and a call to action related to the movie's subject matter. Visitors to the site can also sign up to host a film screening that promotes action to resolve the conflict portrayed in the film. In addition, the site offers an interactive film screenings map, and visitors can register to receive e-mail updates about the organization and current campaigns.
