World Water Day

Mission:
To focus attention on the importance of fresh water and advocate for the sustainable management of fresh-water resources.

Background:
Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) of the United Nations, the World Water Day Web site features information and resources on the international observance, which highlights a specific aspect of fresh water each year on March 22. This year's theme is Water and Food Security; last year, the theme was Water for Cities. The day was designated by the United Nations General Assemblyin 1992, and the first World Water Day was held in 1993.

The World Water Day Web site features an interactive map, powered by Google, of eventsaround the world; videos and animationrelated to this year's theme, including one on the water cyclethat can be downloaded and saved to disc or imported to iTunes and played on an iPod or iPhone; World Water Day campaign materials; and a videoin which Pasquale Steduto, principal officer for the FAO Water Development and Management Unit, discusses water for agriculture. Visitors to the site also can find more informationabout World Water Day and frequently asked questionson the year's theme.
