Water for People

Water for People

Mission:
To build a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation and no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease.

Background:
Water for People was incorporated in the United States in February 1991 and later expanded to Canada. The organization works to improve the quality of life in developing countries by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water supplies and hygiene education programs. In 2009, Water for People provided more than 325,000 beneficiaries with safe drinking water resources and improved sanitation facilities.

Outstanding Web Features:
In the fall of 2010, Water for People launched a first-of-its-kind monitoring tool called FLOW (Field Level Operations Watch) that uses Google Earth software to display the status of its projects in developing countries. FLOW allows the public and key stakeholders — governments, partners, and donors — to view in real-time which projects are working, which are broken, and which are on the verge of disrepair. In addition, the organization's social networking site, TAP Portal, includes collaborative sites that enable various groups to have deeper conversations on a broad range of topics. While there, visitors to the portal site can also send free e-cards to help raise awareness about the organization's work.
