Zafèn
Mission:
To connect a global community of lenders and donors with individual entrepreneurs in Haiti who have the economic vision to create jobs for themselves and other Haitians.
Background:
Zafèn, which means "it's our business" in Haitian Creole, was established by DePaul University, Fonkoze, the Worldwide Vincentian Family, and the Haitian Hometown Associations Resource Group to stimulate collaboration among Haitian business owners, the Haitian diaspora, friends of Haiti, and others interested in supporting and helping to rebuild the impoverished Caribbean country's economy. Since its launch in April 2010, Zafèn has raised more than $175,000 to fund more than 1,500 scholarships for Haitian children, while some 600 micro-projects have been fully funded by more than 600 donors — mostly through loans and donations of less than $100. As a result, nearly 660 jobs have been created for native Haitians.
Outstanding Web Features:
Zafen.org features pages that link to fundable projects in Haiti designed to create jobs, educate children, improve the environment, and/or provide new services to communities. Each page includes a detailed summary of the project, an explanation of how the community involved will be affected, and the amount of money needed and raised to date. Visitors registered on the site can also make microloans or donations, update their profile page with a photo and personal biography, and create or join teams as a way to pool their contributions with other donors. In adition, visitors to the site can browse news about the organization and project updates.
