Zooming In on Health Reform

Zooming In on Health Reform

Mission:
To highlight how expansion of Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act will affect the number and composition of Medicaid enrollees and the uninsured.

Background:
While it is generally acknowledged that the Affordable Care Act will expand Medicaid coverage to millions of people and reduce the population of uninsured Americans, the real impact of the legislation will vary by state and geographic area depending on current coverage patterns and socio-demographic/economic factors. A new interactive map developed by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation's Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured illustrates the estimated growth in Medicaid enrollment, reductions in the uninsured population, and changes in the demographic distribution of each group by state, metro area, and county. An accompanying report, State and Local Coverage Changes Under Full Implementation of the Affordable Care Act, provides a more detailed analysis.

Outstanding Web Features:
Visitors to the site can mouse over the map to see projected percentage increases in Medicaid enrollment or reductions in the number of uninsured under ACA. Visitors also can "zoom in" on an area or enter a state name, specific zip code, or county to access and compare charts showing the projected increase in Medicaid enrollees and/or decrease in the number of uninsured, as well as the percentage relative to the overall population and changes in distribution by age group, race/ethnicity, language, and gender. Results are presented alongside data for the larger geographic area that contains the selected area (e.g., metro => state, state => national), but users can also enter their own comparison locations. In addition, visitors can keep abreast of ongoing developments via a chart that tracks state actions taken on Medicaid expansion.
