Association of Academic Museums & Galleries 2022 Operational Data Collection

While 70 percent of academic museums have staff that teach students at the educational institutions they are part of, only 35 percent of museum directors, 29 percent of curators, and 20 percent of education staff hold a faculty position, a report from the Association of Academic Museums & Galleries (AAMG) finds. Funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and based on survey responses from 196 of 425 AAMG member organizations, the report, Association of Academic Museums & Galleries 2022 Operational Data Collection (103 pages, PDF), provides benchmark data on the types, budgets, governance, staff, number of visitors, size of educational institution, support of academic community and students, and other characteristics of academic museums. According to the report, 67 percent are art museums and galleries, followed by anthropology museums (15 percent), natural history museums (13 percent), history museums or historical societies (8 percent), historic sites or houses (5 percent), science or technology centers or museums (5 percent), and arboretums or botanic gardens (1 percent). For most academic museums, the majority of their operating budget is provided via direct support from the academic institution (average 55 percent), followed by endowments (20 percent), fundraising from individuals (9 percent), and public and private grants (9 percent).
