'Cultivating Nonprofit Leadership: A Philanthropic Opportunity'
If they want to help support broad-based social justice movements that lead to systemic change, U.S. foundations should invest more in executive leadership development at the grassroots level, a report from the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy finds. The report, Cultivating Nonprofit Leadership: A Philanthropic Opportunity (38 pages, PDF), argues that support for nonprofit leaders at the grassroots level is essential to social change because it helps to infuse fresh thinking into the sector and catalyzes innovation; prevents burnout among nonprofit leaders; and leads to more inclusiveness in the leadership ranks. What's more, because effective leadership and movement building are so inextricably linked, the report calls on grantmakers to increase their funding for leadership development as an integral part of their program strategy; engage grantees in creating a mutually agreed-upon vision of nonprofit leadership; design leadership development programs using a culturally inclusive lens; and strengthen their support for nonprofit executives by working to build the capacity of other staff as well.
