Foundation Giving for Disability: Priorities and Trends
In 2019, three-quarters of foundations included in Candid’s Foundation 1000 dataset made at least one grant focused on disability, yet those grant dollars totaling $755.1 million represented just 2 percent of total grantmaking, a report from the Disability & Philanthropy Forum finds. The report, Foundation Giving for Disability: Priorities and Trends (83 pages, PDF), also found that just 8 percent of funders and 6.4 percent of U.S.-focused disability funding supported disability rights and social justice, while the rest went to supports and services. In addition, only 5 percent of domestic-focused and global funding for disability was designated for racial and ethnic minorities, 3 percent focused on women and girls, and less than 1 percent specified LGBTQ people with disabilities. Those figures indicate that “most disability funders have placed limited intentional focus on recognizing that disability cuts across all identity groups and that systems of oppression reinforce and amplify one another,” the report states.
