Health in Mind: Improving Education Through Wellness

Given research which shows that health disparities affect educational outcomes, federal policy should more actively promote health and wellness in schools to ensure that students are better prepared to learn, a report from Trust for America's Health and Healthy Schools Campaign argues. The report, Health in Mind: Improving Education Through Wellness (77 pages, PDF), presents a series of case studies and policy recommendations designed to encourage the involvement of teachers and principals in student health and wellness; the inclusion of health and wellness into school metrics, accountability, and recognition programs; the placement of a nurse in every school; and an increase in the Department of Education's capacity to address student health and wellness issues. Funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the report argues that incorporating good nutrition, physical activity, basic safety, access to care, and education about how to make healthy choices into the school day will help close the achievement gap and enhance the nation's healthcare system.
