'Towards a 21st Century Approach: Advancing a Vision for Prevention and Public Health'

Advancing the health, safety, and equity of communities nationwide requires the involvement of all stakeholders, from policy makers and healthcare professionals to businesses and community leaders, a report from Prevention Institute finds. According to the report, Towards a 21st Century Approach: Advancing a Vision for Prevention and Public Health (16 pages, PDF), transformation of the field of public health requires four elements to create a new playing field — engaging community institutions and leaders outside the sector, seeking grassroots solutions, involving the healthcare industry in changing physical and social environments, and engaging businesses in promoting community health; and two elements to support a strategic approach — fostering changes in the community environment and building a shared movement by communicating a vision of opportunity and change. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the report calls on stakeholders to expand their skill sets so as to better engage policy makers, create innovative alliances, and engage and nurture new leaders.
