'Vital Funding: Investing in LGBTQ Health and Wellbeing'
Like other minority groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people face significant health disparities, yet less than 0.5 percent of foundation funding for health is directed to LGBTQ communities, a report from Funders for LGBTQ Issues finds. According to the report, Vital Funding: Investing in LGBTQ Health and Wellbeing (28 pages, PDF), LGBTQ youth are more likely to smoke than their straight peers and, as adults, are more likely to be uninsured and attempt suicide. Moreover, only 21 percent of funding from U.S. foundations and corporations for HIV/AIDS targeted LGBTQ communities, even though that group accounts for 64 percent of new HIV infections. The report highlights opportunities for grantmakers to explore collaborative efforts to address mental and behavioral health concerns, increase access in the LGBTQ community to health insurance coverage, build the capacity of the HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ health services sector, improve the cultural competence of health services providers, and strengthen the LGBTQ health policy and advocacy infrastructure.
