'Youth Hold the Key: Building Your Workforce Today and in the Future'

To meet employers' demand for young workers and reduce youth unemployment, more should and can be done to tap the potential of "opportunity youth" — those without a college degree who are disconnected from work and school, a report from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bridgespan Group, and Bain & Company finds. Based on a survey of three hundred and fifty employers and interviews with employers and workforce experts, the report, Youth Hold the Key: Building Your Workforce Today and in the Future (14 pages, PDF), found that while many companies reported challenges — including difficulty finding the right match, lack of professionalism or relevant qualifications, and low retention rates — employer-led job training initiatives and best practices such as integrating youth employment into the company's business priorities can strengthen the pipeline of work-ready youth. Scaling such efforts, however, will require a systemic effort, including  a focus on increasing cross-sector partnerships among employers, K-12 and postsecondary institutions, and social change and philanthropic organizations.
