$10 million gift to 59E59 Theaters allows rent-free productions
A $10 million gift from the Elysabeth Kleinhans Theatrical Foundation will enable 59E59 Theaters to run productions without charging rent, American Theatre reports.
Beginning this summer, the New York City-based theater complex, which is owned and operated by the Kleinhans Foundation, will offer space for its more than 30 productions a year at no cost. The gift extends 59E59’s business model, which is almost entirely funded by foundation, increasing its annual funding to $2.3 million. The increased funding allows visiting theater companies to focus completely on show production rather than securing financing.
“By eliminating rental fees for producing plays at our venue, the foundation has shattered one of the many financial barriers to emerging companies presenting new works, opening our doors to diverse voices and innovative productions that might otherwise not be seen,” said 59E59 managing director Brian Beirne in a statement.
