Barr Foundation announces $32.7 million in third-quarter grants
The Boston-based Barr Foundation has announced third-quarter grants totaling $32.7 million in support of education, climate, arts, and special initiatives in the region as well as nonprofit sector effectiveness.
In the area of Education, the foundation awarded 27 grants totaling $9.7 million, including $3 million to Springpoint, which will provide technical assistance to six schools engaged in school redesign work, and $400,000 to Parents Leading for Education Equity to train more families in education advocacy. Through its Climate program, the foundation awarded 27 grants totaling $13.5 million, including $4 million to the Transportation for Massachusetts (T4MA) Coalition to bolster efforts to align the coalition toward transportation justice and its new mission, vision, priorities, and approach, and $900,000 in general operating support to One Square World.
The foundation also awarded 10 grants totaling $6.3 million through its Arts & Creativity program, including two grants totaling $4.1 million to the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency to strengthen local infrastructure, grow creative economies, and support artists to lead community-engaged collaborative projects through its Transformative Development Initiative. In the area of Special Initiatives, four grants totaling $1.2 million were awarded, including $100,000 to Boston Harbor Now to support the Waterfront Data Project, which aims to measure and understand how residents utilize public spaces around Boston’s waterfront and the Harbor Islands. In addition, 11 grants totaling $2.1 million were awarded through the Sector Effectiveness program, including $300,000 in general operating support to New England Blacks in Philanthropy.
