Barr Foundation awards $27.1 Million in first quarter of 2022

The Boston-based Barr Foundation has announced first-quarter grants totaling $27.1 million in support of organizations across New England.

The awards include $16.5 million in grants approved since mid-November and nearly $10.6 million approved in March. In the area of arts and creativity, the foundation awarded eight grants totaling $2.9 million, including $1 million to The Theater Offensive (TTO) in support of developing a black box theater that will serve as the first and largest permanent arts space designed, owned, and operated by queer and trans people of color. In the area of climate, the foundation awarded 19 grants totaling $14.3 million, including $1 million to Health Resources in Action in support of equitable community processes to guide decision making on the use of American Rescue Plan Act funds in Massachusetts.

In support of education, the foundation awarded 13 grants totaling $4 million, including $500,000 to White Mountains Regional School District in support of the ongoing redesign of the district’s only high school. And in support of sector effectiveness, the foundation awarded 16 grants totaling $1.3 million, including $150,000 to United Way of Massachusetts Bay, which is partnering with the Institute for Nonprofit Practice and The Partnership to redesign and expand of its board connection training series to advance more equitable and diverse board leadership for nonprofits.
