Barr Foundation awards fourth-quarter grants totaling $43 million

The Boston-based Barr Foundation has announced fourth-quarter grants totaling $43.2 million in support of organizations working in the areas of climate change, education, sector effectiveness, and the arts.

In the Arts & Creativity category, the foundation awarded forty grants totaling $20.4 million including $2.6 million to the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency in support of artist-led community-based projects and efforts to grow creative economies in Gateway Cities. In the Climate category, the foundation awarded thirty grants totaling over $5 million, including a $125,000 to the University of Massachusetts Foundation in support of the Mass Ecosystem Climate Adaptation Network, which aims to expand learning networks for climate resilience and community engagement, and $400,000 to the Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) in support of a pilot cohort of six climate fellows.

In the Education category, the foundation awarded thirty-five grants totaling $12.3 million including a grant of $2.8 million to Springpoint (National Center for Civic Innovation, fiscal sponsor) in support of a new two-year teacher-to-leader fellowship program that will prepare future school leaders to lead for equity by reimagining high school.

In addition, in the area of Sector Effectiveness, the foundation awarded eight grants totaling $2.6 million, including a $1 million grant to the Institute for Nonprofit Practice to design and launch its Black Leadership Institute.
