Barr Foundation awards $3.3 million through new arts portfolio

The Boston-based Barr Foundation has announced grants totaling $3.3 million over three years in support of eight arts organizations across Massachusetts working to transform their business models.

Awarded through the foundation’s recently established Cultural Evolution portfolio, change-capital grants will support organizational business modifications, adaptation, and/or risk-taking. Participating organizations will engage in peer conversations about supporting people through organizational growth, scaling operations and finances, acquiring or expanding cultural facilities, and increasing community engagement and leadership. As part of the Arts & Creativity program, the portfolio aims to assist local arts anchor organizations through a moment of instability, foster a community of practice and shared learning among arts leaders who are in similar lifecycle stages and pivot moments, and support boards to be better prepared to lead organizations going through complex change.

Recipients include Boston Lyric Opera, Community Access to the Arts, Community Music Center of Boston, Company One, Double Edge Theatre, Global Arts Live, Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, and Zeiterion Performing Arts Center.
