The Boston-based Barr Foundation has announced first-quarter grants totaling $34.4 million in support of efforts in education, the environment, arts, and special initiatives across New England as well as to address nonprofit sector effectiveness.

In the area of Arts & Creativity, Barr awarded 28 grants totaling $9 million, including $570,000 to Arts Connect International in support of the Cultural Equity Incubator, and $1 million to the Metropolitan Area Planning Council Arts & Culture Department to leverage its position as the region’s largest planning agency and deepen its impact with municipalities. Through its Climate program, the foundation awarded 18 grants totaling $7.6 million, including $80,000 to Maine Climate Action Now in support of a Gulf of Maine offshore wind educational campaign, and $75,000 to the National Association of City Transportation Officials.

In the area of Education, the foundation awarded 24 grants totaling $8.2 million, including a three-year, $900,000 grant to Generation Teach to provide core support for its New England regional activities, and $95,000 to Georgetown University’s  Edunomics Lab to provide additional training, analysis, and consultation to the New England education sector. And the Sector Effectiveness and Racial Wealth Equity Initiative joined forces to award a $1 million grant to Third Sector New England in support of a new shared services program.
