California Community Foundation Awards $1 Million to Los Angeles Nonprofits

The Los Angeles-based California Community Foundation has announced more than $1 million in grants to six nonprofit organizations in the Greater Los Angeles area.

The grants, part of the foundation's Nurturing Neighborhoods - Building Community initiative, include $200,000 to the East Valley Community Health Center to support the construction of a new clinic that will provide healthcare services to uninsured families and individuals. In addition to primary healthcare services, EVCHC provides a health education program focused on teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS prevention that serves 20,000 individuals annually.

"We are so fortunate that the California Community Foundation understands the healthcare needs of the working poor and uninsured," said EVCHC development director Mary Kashmar. "The foundation's support of East Valley's building project will go a long way to help us meet those needs."

Early education grants made by the foundation in this funding round include $150,000 to support a literacy program for abused children ages 6 to 13 at Hollygrove Children & Family Services, and $200,000 to Para Los Niños for completion of a facility that will provide youth services and crisis intervention to children and their families.

In addition, the foundation made three grants totaling more than $500,000 to support employment-training programs for adults, foster care youth, and at-risk young people in southwest and south Los Angeles.
