California Wellness Foundation Awards Nearly $10 Million in Grants
The California Wellness Foundation in Woodland Hills has announced grants totaling nearly $10 million to sixty-seven organizations.
Grants were awarded in eight areas — diversity in the health professions, environmental health, healthy aging, mental health, teenage pregnancy prevention, violence prevention, women's health, and work and health — as well as for a variety of special projects. Recipients include the San Diego Science Alliance, which was awarded $100,000 over two years for an initiative to expand healthcare pathway programs serving Latino and African-American high school students; the Sierra Fund, which will receive $125,000 over two years in support of environmental health education and public policy efforts related to the health impacts of mining in Sierra Nevada communities; and My Friend's Place, which was awarded $100,000 over two years for its drop-in-center-based services for homeless youth.
Other grants include $200,000 over two years to the California Family Health Council in support of a social media project focused on teen pregnancy prevention; $180,000 over two years to Taller San Jose for job training, job placement, and support services as a violence prevention strategy for formerly incarcerated youth; and $150,000 over two years to the San Diego American Indian Health Center in support of primary medical care and dental services for underserved residents.
