Colorado State University Receives $20 Million for New Stadium
Colorado State University in Fort Collins has announced a pledge of $20 million over thirty years from an anonymous donor to name the university's new football field after former CSU head football coach Sonny Lubick.
Lubick, one of winningest coaches in CSU history, led the men's football team to six conference titles and nine bowl games during his fourteen-year tenure (1993-2007) as head coach. The donor of the gift — the second $20 million gift the university has received this month — stipulated that the name "Sonny Lubick Field" be transferred from Hughes Stadium, which was named in Lubick's honor in 2003 as part of a $15.2 million gift from Pat Stryker, to the new stadium under construction. The $220 million multi-purpose stadium is scheduled to open for the 2017 season.
"This generous gift is a testament to Sonny's deep roots in Fort Collins," said Colorado State athletics director Joe Parker. "He brought humanity, heart, and excellence to Rams Athletics and has continued to serve our university and community as an educator, ambassador, and tireless champion. We are thrilled to recognize that legacy at the new stadium."
"CSU has been a special place for us for more than thirty years," said Lubick. "To me, this isn't just a tribute to one person, but to the entire football program — the players, coaches, staff, and fans who help make CSU great."
