Community Foundation Update (01/18/2025)
California
The San Francisco Foundation has announced the appointment of Christopher Burnett to its board of trustees. Burnett is president of the Long Ridge Foundation and Long Ridge Action Fund.
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) has announced that in 2024 it awarded grants to 115 nonprofits in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties through its Community Action Grants program, which provides funding to organizations working with communities that have historically faced discrimination and lack of access to resources. Nonprofits working in arts and culture, environmental protection, faith-based initiatives, local journalism, health services, and movement and power-building activities received grants from SVCF, including Rise South City, California Press Foundation, Coastside Hope, and Youth Utilizing Power and Praise.
Connecticut
The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced a $2.9 million investment in the Greater Together Community Funds. Each of the foundation’s 29 community funds will receive $100,000. As of December 2024, the town committees have made 659 individual grants totaling $2.48 million, and as a result of their success, Community Funds has become a permanent program at the foundation. This is the first of several major investments that will be announced over the course of 2025, the foundation’s 100th anniversary year.
The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut in New London has announced grants of more than $333,000 in 2024 for women and girls programs, a 6 percent year-over-year increase. Recipients include the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut; Move to Heal, Campaign School at Yale University, and Step Up New London.
Florida
The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has announced that, in collaboration with the Patterson and Charles and Margery Barancik foundations, and individual donors, a $3 million challenge has been matched, unlocking $2 million for The Bay. The $5 million will fuel expansion and free programming at the 53-acre park. Funding will be used to support the design and development of an expanded “resilient shoreline,” as well as ongoing park operations, maintenance, and free events and activities.
Iowa
The Quad Cities Community Foundation in Bettendorf has announced that the Hubbell-Waterman Foundation, a private foundation it administers, will award more than $2 million to 73 area nonprofits in 2025 to advance its vision of a growing, thriving, inclusive community through investments in innovation and accessibility. In 2024, the foundation’s recipients included River Bend Food Bank, West End Alano Club, Hand in Hand, and Common Chord.
The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation recently approved over $3 million in grants to 269 nonprofit organizations. Recipients include Central Furniture Rescue, Feed Iowa First, Kids First Law Center, and YPN.
Massachusetts
The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts in Springfield has announced grants totaling more than $3.2 million in support of 109 nonprofits in Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties, an increase of more than $900,000 in grant support since last year. Increased awards were made possible by new partnerships with the MassMutual Foundation and an individual donor committed to addressing the needs of families in Franklin County. Recipients include A Queen’s Narrative, Art Garden, Davenport Child Care, and LaunchSpace.
Minnesota
The St. Paul and Minnesota Foundation has announced that president and CEO Eric J. Jolly will retire in 2025 after nearly a decade at the foundation. During 2024, the foundation approved a new five-year strategic plan, underwent a grant redesign process, and charted its initial plans to expand the use of investment capital to drive systemic change.
Montana
The Park County Community Foundation in Livingston has announced that its Living Life Fund will hold a benefit concert and silent auction on February 15, 2025 at the Livingston Elks Lodge. “Music for the Heart of Park County” will raise funds for local nonprofits working to empower children in Park County by fostering mental health and resiliency through outdoor experiences and mentorship opportunities. The valentine-themed event will include performances by local musicians Marcedes Carroll, Blake Brightman, and Rancho Deluxe.
New Jersey
The Princeton Area Community Foundation (PACF) has announced the selection of Mathieu Nelessen as president and CEO, effective in early February, as well as the election of new board leaders and the appointment of six trustees to serve on the governing body. Nelessen currently serves as CEO of the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance. PACF named Marygrace Billek board chair, and Michael Ullmann was selected as vice chair. In addition, Kemi Alli, Dan Fatton, Theo Kim, Rajashekar Manimaran, Joanne Rodríguez, and Christina Strong were appointed to the board.
