Community Foundation Update (01/21/2023)
Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced the additions of Rob Blalock, Rashada LeRoy, and Guin Robinson to its board of directors and the election of Brian Hamilton as board chair. Blalock serves as president of Brasfield and Corrie, a construction firm; LeRoy is CEO of LRY Media Group, a solutions agency specializing in experiential events; and Robinson is dean of economic development for Jefferson State Community College. Hamilton is president and CEO of Trillion Communications Corp. and earned his law degree from the Birmingham School of Law.
California
The Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) has announced the launch of the SVCF Emergency and Disaster Relief Fund for the 10-county Bay Area region in support of immediate and long-term recovery efforts in response to a wide range of disasters, from storms to wildfires to acts of violence. The fund will prioritize efforts in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. SVCF will seed the fund with $50,000 and will help fundraise to ensure the fund remains ready to provide ongoing, flexible resources to meet communities’ immediate needs in times of emergency, assist in building community resilience, and be prepared to act quickly when future disasters occur. Depending on the nature of the emergency or disaster, the fund will support needs such as shelter, food, housing, financial assistance, and other services. SVCF will regularly report which emergency events or disasters are being addressed and which counties are receiving support.
The Santa Barbara Foundation has announced the election of Richard Beswick, Raphael Gonzalez, and Lynn Scarlett to its board of trustees. Beswick, a scientist with expertise in the areas of hypertension and kidney disease in minority populations, is vice president for research and chief research officer for Cottage Health Research Institute. Gonzalez is a partner at the law firm of Mullen & Henzell. And Scarlett retired in 2021 from the Nature Conservancy, where she served as global chief external affairs officer. In 2006, she also served as acting U.S. secretary of the interior.
Massachusetts
The Cambridge Community Foundation has announced that it is partnering with Arrow Street Arts (ASA), a new nonprofit that is revitalizing two spaces at Two Arrow Street to increase equitable access to the spaces for artists, arts organizations, and other community groups, especially those from historically underserved communities. The ASA/CCF partnership also will focus on raising new funds for CCF’s Cultural Capital Fund, established in 2020 with the City of Cambridge to support creative work by Cambridge-centered artists.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that 16 local professionals graduated from its Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy program, a year-long curriculum of graduate-level coursework that provides professionals the knowledge, resources, and tools they need to help clients meet their charitable giving objectives as well as their estate planning and wealth management goals.
New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation in Concord has awarded grants totaling $3,810,500 through its Community Grants Program to support the operations of 82 nonprofits working in the areas of health and well-being, environmental protection, education, housing and other basic needs, arts and culture, civic health, and economic security. Contributions from the foundation’s donor-advised funds made it possible to increase total 2022 grantmaking through the program by more than $1 million.
Ohio
The Dayton Foundation has announced the latest cohort of its Del Mar Encore Fellows Initiative, which deploys retired or career-transitioning older adults to nonprofits tackling critical needs in Greater Dayton. Seven highly skilled older adults were selected to serve as fellows for two years. In addition, Leigh Sempeles, a 2021 fellow who worked with the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission’s Institute for Livable and Equitable Communities, will serve as a senior fellow providing oversight for the initiative.
Pennsylvania
The Charles E. Kaufman Foundation, a supporting organization of the Pittsburgh Foundation, has announced grants totaling $2 million in support of innovative, interdisciplinary scientific research at Pennsylvania universities. Awarded in three categories—New Investigator research , New Initiatives research , and Integrated Research-Education—the grants will support research at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, West Chester University, Chatham University, Dickinson College, and Pennsylvania State University.
Texas
Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) has announced that, in partnership with the Dallas Foundation, it has awarded grants totaling $250,000 to 20 nonprofits working to addressing systemic racial inequity in local communities. Supported programs include those providing mentoring and tutoring for youth, social-emotional and mental health services, access to healthy food, maternal health care, legal services for citizenship, and connection to living wage jobs.
Washington, D.C.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced the addition of Allie Betts, as senior director of development and Tiffanie Purvis as general counsel and senior philanthropic advisor. Betts previously served as director of development at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Purvis’s previous positions include planned giving officer for the Southern Poverty Law Center and assistant director of gift planning and director of gift planning at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Wisconsin
The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation has announced that the Green Bay Packers Foundation has provided a $250,000 grant for the matching pool of funds for the community foundation’s Give BIG Green Bay, which will take place on February 21-22. Thanks to other community donors, an additional $250,000 in matching funds will be available, for a total of $500,000, to benefit the 45 participating nonprofits.
