California

The San Diego Foundation has announced it is coordinating with the County of San Diego to launch the San Diego Flood Response Fund to deploy flexible resources rapidly into the community and support organizations responding to this past week’s unprecedented flooding across the county. The fund will receive gifts and make emergency grants to nonprofit service organizations engaged in disaster response and relief. The foundation will match donations up to $100,000, and 100 percent of donations to the San Diego Flood Response Fund will go toward nonprofits helping San Diegans impacted by the flood. The fund will not grant directly to individuals or families, but to nonprofit organizations that serve individuals and families.

The San Francisco Foundation has announced the addition of Sergio Garcia to its board of trustees. An attorney, Garcia is CEO of Garcia Strategic Advisors LLC, where he provides strategic advice to executives and boards on governance, risk mitigation, and crisis management. In addition, the foundation noted the passing of Joe Brooks, who served as program executive for its Neighborhood and Community Development program from 1991 to 1999.

Connecticut

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced that the Catalyst Endowment Fund has appointed Amanda Aronson as chair of its steering committee and Bill McDonald as vice chair. Aronson is founder and president of StoryB, a consultancy, and McDonald is a founding partner and senior wealth management advisor at Tidewater Wealth Management.

Maine

The Maine Community Foundation (MaineCF) has announced grants totaling $120,000 to nonprofit organizations that provide transportation services. Through its Maine Charity Foundation Fund, MaineCF awarded $91,000 to 14 organizations, and another $29,000 was awarded to four organizations by donors with advised funds at MaineCF. Recipients include Healthy Acadia, Knox County Homeless Coalition, and Neighbors Driving Neighbors.

Tennessee

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee (CFMT), Music Venue Alliance of Nashville, Belmont University, Broadway Entertainment Association, and Nashville Musicians Association have announced the launch of the Greater Nashville Music Census, which aims to collect a data from local musicians, music professionals, music nonprofits, and music venues regarding how they both live and work within the greater Nashville area. It will then analyze the results and provide community leaders and policy makers with potential legislative solutions to address what many view as a mounting creative culture crisis facing Nashville. The organizations will work in partnership with Sound Music Cities, a civic-oriented music policy firm that is working to collect similar data across 20 U.S. cities.

Texas

The Dallas Foundation, founded in 1929 as the first community foundation in Texas, has announced the appointment of six new members to its board of governors: Tim Hafer, Rev. Dr. Lael Melville, Bridge Moreno Lopez, Susan Salka, Joe Schloesser, and Courtney Underwood. Hafer is executive vice president and chief financial officer at Kronos Worldwide, Inc.; Melville is the CEO and co-founder of the Randolph W. and Dr. Lael C. Melville Family Foundation; Lopez is an attorney and prosecutor who advocates for survivors of child abuse and family violence; Salka has served in the healthcare industry for more than 30 years; Schloesser is a vice president at ISN; and Underwood has led several initiatives to provide support and resources for survivors of sexual assault across north Texas.

The University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas) has received a $2 million grant from Communities Foundation of Texas to create the first endowed position in the university’s history. The gift establishes an endowment fund that will support and sustain the executive director of the Caruth Police Institute at UNT Dallas, including salary, research and academic advancements, engagement in scholarly activities, and other annual costs.

West Virginia

The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation has announced the launch of three endowment funds: the KidzWorld Childcare and Learning Center Support Fund, the Legacy Christian Academy Support Fund, and the Rock Church and Family Worship Center Support Fund. Managed by the foundation, the funds will provide a permanent source of funding for the three organizations.

Washington

The Kitsap Community Foundation in Silverdale has announced that local nonprofits can register for the 11th annual Kitsap Great Give, which will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Founded in 2014, the online event fosters unity, channeling support toward the nonprofit organizations that enhance the quality of life for all residents. The goal of the upcoming campaign is to surpass the $2 million mark and reinforce the impact of the community movement. The deadline to register is January 31.

Wisconsin

The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region in Appleton has announced a $2,500 grant in support of the Fox Cities Book Festival for its Fox Cities NEA Big Read event. Awarded through the foundation’s Community Vision Fund, the funding includes support for a presentation by best-selling author Patricia Engel on April 5.

Wyoming

The Wyss Foundation has announced a $1.5 million grant to the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole (CFJH) in support of three focus areas: behavioral health, housing solutions, and education and families. According to Wyss, the initiatives create unique opportunities for CFJH to connect and convene partners, so it can collaboratively address issues the community has identified as critical.
