Alaska
The Alaska Community Foundation has announced the selection of Alexandra McKay as president and CEO. A longtime nonprofit official, McKay has served as vice president of strategies and impact at the Rasmuson Foundation, executive vice president and chief counsel for Casey Family Programs, and deputy director at the Schultz Family Foundation.
California
The California Community Foundation (CCF) has announced a partnership with the California Black Freedom Fund (CBFF) and the State of California, which has committed $3.5 million. CCF will be the Southern California home for CBFF and work to bolster the organization's efforts to advance racial equity, support Black-led power building organizations, and foster systemic change. Launched in 2020, CBFF aims to address the systemic barriers that have historically marginalized Black communities and supports organizations working toward a more just and equitable society.
Florida
The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has announced the launch of a literacy program with four nonprofit organizations. UFLI Foundations: An Explicit and Systematic Phonics Program is a curriculum designed by Dr. Holly Lane, the director of the University of Florida’s Literacy Institute (UFLI), to help teachers with students who need to improve their reading skills to achieve grade-level status. To that end, the foundation is convening this pilot program to bring UFLI to Palm Beach and Martin Counties and working with the Banner Lake Club, Fuller Center, Achievement Center for Children and Families, and Edna W. Runner Tutorial Center.
Kansas
The Central Kansas Community Foundation in Newton has announced the appointment of Carrie Herman as associate director. Most recently, she served as executive director of the Kansas Learning Center for Health and previously served as vice president of operations at Asbury Park, which is now known as Paramount Community Living.
The Hutchinson Community Foundation has announced two grants totaling $12,050 through its Fund for Reno County. The recipients are Wisdom in Motion and Earth Matters. In addition, the foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council awarded nine grants totaling $5,000, also to groups from Reno County. Recipients include BrightHouse, Reins of Hope, Family Community Theatre, and Stage 9.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that the Omaha Pathways Community HUB is partnering with three local organizations to provide pregnancy care coordination services. Community health workers at A Mother’s Love, Charles Drew Health Center, and CHI Health are using the national Pathways Initiative HUB model to utilize their deep understanding and connections to the community to assist people during and after pregnancy. The community health workers, who are trained frontline public health workers, work with at-risk individuals and connect them with medical, behavioral, and social services to remove barriers to health. The initial phase of the program will focus on addressing health disparities among pregnant and postpartum individuals at greatest risk for poor birth outcomes.
New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation (NHCF) has announced it is working in conjunction with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, the Community College System of New Hampshire, and the Foundation for New Hampshire Community Colleges to make free job training available to people who receive SNAP benefits. The program enables people to receive training for professional licensing or accreditation in a variety of fields through Manchester Community College. Tuition and fees are covered by federal USDA funds, while NHCF funding is helping reduce barriers for these students by covering the supplies or other expenses necessary for them to get this education—from stethoscopes or work boots to car repairs so they can get to classes.
Pennsylvania
The Charles E. Kaufman Foundation, a supporting organization of the Pittsburgh Foundation, has announced grants totaling $1.8 million in support of innovative, interdisciplinary scientific research at Pennsylvania universities. Awarded in three categories—new investigator research, new initiatives research , and integrated research-education—the grants will support research at Carnegie Mellon, Temple, Drexel, and Pennsylvania State universities; the University of Pennsylvania; and Gettysburg College.
The Erie Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Steve Weiser as vice president of philanthropic services. Most recently, he served as executive director of the Erie Philharmonic. In addition, the foundation announced that chief financial officer Barb Sambroak will retire on June 30 after 19 years.
