California
The San Diego Foundation has announced the selection of Mark Stuart as its new president and CEO. A longtime nonprofit official, Stuart has served as chief development and membership officer at the San Diego Zoo, as president of the zoo's foundation, and as associate dean of development and alumni relations at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
Indiana
The Central Indiana Community Foundation has selected three Indianapolis public schools to participate in the Herbert Simon Love of Reading Project, a two-year pilot program designed to increase the number of students reading at grade level. Francis W. Parker Montessori School 56, Meredith Nicholson School 96, and Jonathan Jennings School 109 will each receive funding to refresh their existing media center, add more staff focused on literacy skill development and create programming for the entire family, and expand book collections, both at school and in students' homes. The project had its genesis in a partnership between the Herbert Simon Family Foundation and CICF focused on developing a "Legacy Project" in Herbert Simon's lifetime that honors his personal and philanthropic passion for literacy.
Iowa
The Clinton-based River Bluff Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque, has announced the addition of Tara Bellich, a trust officer at Clinton National Bank, to its board of directors.
Ohio
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation has announced a series of community leadership grants to five organizations engaged in impactful equity work. In 2017, the foundation launched a redesigned community impact strategy aimed at spotlighting equity issues. After doing research on challenges in the region, the foundation committed to prioritizing a deep, concentrated focus on housing stability and economic mobility for people of color and low-income women. To that end, the foundation awarded five grants totaling $250,000 in support of its new equity strategy. Grant recipients include 4C for Children, HOME (Housing Opportunities Made Equal), Over-the-Rhine Community Housing, Healthy Homes Block by Block, and its own Women's Fund.
Pennsylvania
The Erie Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $48,004 through an endowed fund established in 1998 by William Schuster. In what has become an annual tradition, the "Schuster Day" grants were awarded to a dozen organizations Schuster chose to receive gifts from the fund. Recipients include the Community Country Day School, the Erie Playhouse, the Erie Zoological Society, and the Sight Center of Northwest Pennsylvania.
South Carolina
According to GSA Business Report, revised designs for the Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy, a $4 million headquarters building and meeting space launched by the Spartanburg County Foundation, have been approved by the Spartanburg Design Review Board. Among other things, the 15,000-square-foot facility will house the first center for philanthropy in the region and serve as a hub for individuals and organizations working to address challenges in the Spartanburg area. Donated to the foundation in 2017 by Susu and George Dean Johnson, the property is located adjacent to the foundation's headquarters.
Vermont
The Vermont Community Foundation has announced half a dozen inaugural grants totaling more than $21,000 from the Opportunity Fund for Southshire Youth, which was established in 2018 to address the skill-building needs of middle- and high-school-age youth. Of the total, $11,593 was made possible by Giving Together, a program of the foundation that shares grant proposals with fundholders and donors, giving them the opportunity to co-fund projects. The grant recipients are the Alliance for Community Transformation, Bennington College, the Center for Restorative Justice, the Community College of Vermont Bennington, Vermont Arts Exchange, and the Young Hacks Academy.
Washington
The San Juan Island Community Foundation in Friday Harbor has selected Scott Boden to chair its board of directors, the San Juan Islander reports. Boden, who joined the board in 2005 and has served as chair of the grants committee and co-chair of the Youth in Philanthropy program, will replace the late Eric Parsons, who had served as chair for the past two years.
The Seattle Foundation has announced that it is partnering again with King County Elections to increase engagement and voter participation in underserved communities through the Voter Education Fund. Through the fund, the partners will award $950,000 in grants over the next two years to organizations working to address low voter turnout in marginalized communities, with selected organizations receiving funding in support of voter outreach activities during the 2019 and 2020 election cycles.
