Community Foundation Update (03/19/2022)

California

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has recognized 17 professional advisors who referred clients to open charitable funds at the foundation and through the Yolo Community Foundation, one of its affiliates, and helped establish funds with diverse charitable purposes in 2021. The virtual ceremony also paid homage to Don Poole, a legendary estate planning attorney who helped transform philanthropy in the region.

ReWork the Bay, a project hosted by the San Francisco Foundation that works to bring together leaders in economic justice, education, business, and philanthropy, has announced the release of an interactive data tool designed to inform policy makers of work and income disparities across the Bay Area. The State of Bay Area Workers is intended to enable partners and funders to make informed decisions about strategy, policy, and practices that lead to needed changes.

Florida

The Community Foundation of Sarasota County has announced the promotion of Angelica Hull to director of community impact; she previously served as manager of grants. The foundation also announced the appointment of Kimberly Heimiller as director of marketing. 

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation in Venice has elected attorney Rose-Anne B. Frano and John R. Giglio, a marine industry executive, to its board of directors. Each began a three-year term on March 1.

Illinois

The Community Foundation of Central Illinois (CFCI) has announced the selection of the 2022 Ending Hunger Together grant recipients. The Ending Hunger Together Fund was established to address food insecurity in central Illinois by working to create a framework that combines healthy food access, civic education, and community development. The proposals submitted by HEAL Food System Partners, led by the Tazewell County Health Department, and Peoria Grown, for their Market 309 project, will each be awarded $25,000 to help address food insecurity issues in the community.

Maine

The Maine Center for Entrepreneurs and Maine Outdoor Brands has named the inaugural participants in its MCE Compass program, which will provide business training to people working in the outdoor recreation industry, MaineBiz reports. Funded in part by the Maine Community Foundation and with additional support from Maine Outdoor Brands and sponsorships from public and private supporters, MCE Compass will establish weekly Zoom meetings with participants, who will also have the opportunity to work with industry leaders from companies such as L.L.Bean, Toad & Co., Grassroots Outdoor Alliance and 1% for the Planet. Speakers will cover topics including scaling operations for national and international markets, supply chain sustainability and social responsibility, and new product innovation using design thinking. According to MaineBiz, the outdoor recreation industry in the state has been growing steadily, supporting more than 40,000 direct jobs, and is projected to more than double from $2.7 billion in 2017 to $5.6 billion by 2030.

North Carolina

The North Carolina Community Foundation has announced that, more than a year after it issued the first North Carolina Healing Communities Fund grants, the fund has distributed a total of $4.25 million to help provide critical resources for nonprofit organizations impacted by revenue loss and increased demand for services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In all, 115 grants, ranging from $25,000 to $55,000, have been awarded across the state by an advisory committee comprised of representatives from the nonprofit, health, and human services sectors; rural and faith communities; and other partners. In addition, the committee referred some grantees to receive capacity-building services from Rural Forward NC to advance the long-term sustainability of these organizations.

South Carolina

The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry has announced that local organizations serving low- to moderate-income residents of Hilton Head Island received grants from the second grant cycle of the Hilton Head Island ARPA/SLFRF COVID-19 Fund. Funded by a $5 million American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 grant the island received to help respond to the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the grants will support nonprofits and other qualified organizations addressing food insecurity and providing health care, housing assistance, child care and education, rent and utility assistance. Recipients include Bluffton Community Soup Kitchen, Central Oak Grove Baptist Church, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, and Volunteers in Medicine.

Massachusetts

The SouthCoast Community Foundation in New Bedford has announced grants totaling $814,000 to 18 organizations working to address the needs of individuals and households with income at or below 80 percent of the applicable area median income and households with no or minimal access to sources of economic relief. The 14th round of grantmaking from the organization’s SouthCoast Emergency Response Fund is made possible, in part, with funding from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development. Recipients include Brockton Area Multi-Services, Health Imperatives, Old Colony YMCA, and the Literary Center.

Texas

Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) has announced the addition of Jim Berry as senior vice president and chief financial officer. Prior to joining CFT, Berrywas the CFO for global real estate developer Harwood International. The foundation also announced the retirement of Beth Bull, who served as senior vice president and chief financial and administrative officer for 14 years.

Washington

The Seattle Foundation has announced the addition of Donna Moodie to its board of trustees. She currently serves as executive director of the Capitol Hill EcoDistrict and executive vice president of Community Roots Housing.
