Alaska
An anonymous donor has pledged $1 million to the Cordova Community Foundation as part of a campaign to raise an endowment of $5 million for the foundation by 2025, the Cordova Times reports. Established in 2019, the foundation is an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation.
California
The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has named William Altavilla, a principal/financial advisor at CAPTRUST, as the winner of the 2021 Don Poole Award in recognition of his contributions to the growth of philanthropy in the region. Altavilla is the eleventh person to be honored with the award, which is given annually to a professional advisor in the region who exemplifies a commitment to charitable causes, devotion to educating clients about charitable giving, and mentorship of fellow advisors in support of their clients' philanthropy. Altavilla currently serves as president of the Sacramento SPCA board of directors and the advisory committee of the Philanthropic Advisors' Forum of the Greater Sacramento Region and is a member of the planned giving committee at the El Dorado Community Foundation.
Over the past twelve months, the Napa Valley Community Foundation has awarded $5.7 million from the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund to address the public health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Napa Valley Register reports. The distributions include $4.9 million in emergency financial assistance to more than fifteen hundred households; $552,000 to "second responder" organizations that provide emergency relief and recovery services; $125,000 in support of COVID-19 testing for vulnerable populations; and $100,000 to assist and stabilize the region's childcare sector and provide childcare slots to low-income and essential workers.
Kansas
The Hutchinson Community Foundation has announced a first round of 2021 grants totaling $35,000 through the Fund for Hutchinson, which was established in 1990 to address the changing needs of Reno County. The recipients of the latest grants are Bluestem PACE, the Salvation Army of Reno County, and Youthrive.
Michigan
The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan has announced that its founding president, Mariam Noland, plans to retire at the end of the year. A longtime leader in the region's philanthropic sector, Noland currently serves on the boards of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and Downtown Detroit Partnership, as well as the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington, D.C. She previously served as the board vice chair of the Henry Ford Health System and the Council on Foundations, chaired the board of the Council of Michigan Foundations, and served on the boards of Independent Sector and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that executive vice president Matt Darling is leaving the foundation on April 2 to become executive director of Fontenelle Forest, a Nebraska-based environmental organization. The foundation also announced that Kelli Cavey will assume the new role of director of donor services.
Ohio
The Cleveland Foundation has announced that the Greater Cleveland COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund has awarded a tenth cycle of biweekly grants in support of the area's nonprofit community. A total of $184,480 was awarded to organizations and groups serving Cuyahoga, Lake, and Geauga counties. Recipients of the grants include the Cleveland Clergy Alliance, MidTown Cleveland, the DDC Clinic – Center for Special Needs Children, Senior Citizen Resources, and the United Black Fund of Greater Cleveland.
The Columbus Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $1.4 million in support of eighteen organizations. Awarded from its Gifts of Kindness Fund, grants ranging from $10,000 to $200,000 were awarded to the Center for Healthy Families, Huckleberry House, Goodwill Columbus, and the Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio.
Pennsylvania
The Forman Arts Initiative and Philadelphia Foundation have announced the launch of Art Works, a $3 million grant program designed to assist community-based arts organizations and emerging artists in the region. To that end, the initiative will select four organizations annually to receive two-year, unrestricted grants of up to $400,000 and four emerging artists to receive two-year grants of $20,000. The program is open to visual and performing artists in any discipline.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced $550,000 in grants from its COVID-19 Response Fund to help residents cope with the continuing impacts of the pandemic. With the most recent grants, the foundation has distributed a total of $7.3 million since launching the fund nearly a year ago. Grant recipients include the Dorcas International Institute, Operation Stand Down, the Samaritans, and WARM Shelter.
