Community Foundation Update (04/04/20)

Alabama

The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has announced a new process designed to make grants quickly available to organizations on the front lines of the COVID-19 outbreak and will dedicate more than $1 million from its competitive grantmaking funds to provide up to $25,000 in rapid response grants to address immediate and basic needs of economically vulnerable populations in the region.

California

The San Francisco Foundation has announced an inaugural round of grants from its SFF COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund. Less than two weeks after announcing the fund's creation, the foundation awarded grants totaling $200,000 to thirty-two organizations working to strengthen tenant and worker protections, food distribution, and support for unhoused people.

Connecticut

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has announced grants totaling more than $1.3 million in support of local nonprofits working to assist vulnerable people and communities over the coming weeks and months. Thirty-one nonprofits serving the greater New Haven region received $1.1 million in accelerated grants, including three made by the foundation's partner, the Valley Community Foundation.

Fairfield County's Community Foundation in Norwalk has announced that it has raised nearly $1.4 million for its COVID-19 Resiliency Fund and has awarded more than $500,000 in support of COVID-related initiatives. As of Thursday, 46 percent of its grantmaking had been awarded in support of physical and mental health, 32 percent in support of housing and economic security, and 25 percent in support of education.

Massachusetts

The Boston Foundation has announced that one of its donor-advised funds, the Waldron Charitable Fund, has awarded $1 million in rapid-response grants to help meet the needs of children impacted by school closings resulting from the COVID-19 crisis.

Minnesota

The Minneapolis Foundation has announced that it will deploy its OneMPLS Fund in support of regional efforts to address the economic impact of COVID-19, beginning with at least $500,000 in grants to local organizations. The fund will provide flexible resources to organizations in the region that are working with communities disproportionately impacted by the virus.

Montana

The Park County Community Foundation in Livingston has announced the launch of a fund to assist organizations working to address the impacts of COVID-19. The foundation seeded the fund with $110,000, which will be focused on supporting organizations working to ensure the health and wellness of children, seniors, virus patients, people without enough food, the homeless, and other at-risk residents.

Nebraska

The Omaha Community Foundation has named Donna Kush as its new president and CEO, succeeding Sara Boyd, who led the organization from 2013 to 2019. Most recently, Kush headed up the effort to create, build, and launch SHARE Omaha, which works with more than four hundred local nonprofit organizations and is a strategic partner of the Omaha Community Foundation.

Oregon

The Oregon Community Foundation has announced that it has received more than $2.5 million in contributions from local companies in support of the foundation's recovery fund. The donations are intended to offer immediate help to communities across Oregon while federal and state assistance works its way through various delivery channels.

Pennsylvania

The Erie Community Foundation has announced that its COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund has raised more than $600,000 from philanthropic partners and individuals. The fund opened with $310,000, and its largest award to date was a grant of $168,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Tennessee

The East Tennessee Foundation in Knoxville has announced that Good Neighbors of Blount County will receive $35,000 from the family of an anonymous donor as part of the #COVIDgiveWhereYouLive effort. The awareness campaign stems from a long-running Give Where You Live community-philanthropy promotion that ETF has managed for years to help donors across the foundation's twenty-five-county footprint identify specific ways to support charitable giving in their communities.

Texas

The Permian Basin Area Foundation in Midland has opened its PBAF Emergency Relief Fund for donations in response to the COVID-19 public health emergency. Established in 2001, the fund serves as a conduit for gifts of financial assets that can be converted into grants to organizations serving communities in the region during and after disasters.

Washington, D.C.

The Greater Washington Community Foundation has named Tonia Wellons as its president and CEO. Wellons has been serving as the foundation's interim president and CEO since October.
