Community Foundation Update (05/19/18)

California

Oceanside Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of the San Diego Foundation, has announced $63,300 in grants aimed at assisting underserved residents in the community and providing more opportunities for youth and families to thrive. Recipients include Encuentros Leadership, the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation, Oceanside Museum of Art, and Voices for Children.

The Placer Community Foundation in Auburn has announced grants totaling $108,000 to organizations working to address and/or support homelessness, hunger, health, youth development, animal welfare, land conservation, legal services, and the arts. Recipients include Kitten Central, Acres of Hope, Blue Line Arts, and PFLAG.

Michigan

The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan in Detroit has announced the appointment of Sheryl G. Arb as vice president of marketing and communications. Arb has worked in strategic communications for more than twenty years, most recently at the Kellogg Company, where she served as senior director of global internal communications.

The Gratiot County Community Foundation in Ithaca has launched the GREAT Communities Initiative, which is designed to generate effective action that transforms communities in Gratiot County, the Morning Sun reports. Grants awarded through the initiative will fund a range of activities, including parks and recreational improvements, beautification and public arts projects, and community events. The foundation will accept a single application from each of the following communities: Alma, Ashley, Breckenridge, Fulton (Middleton/Perrinton), Ithaca, and St. Louis.

Nebraska

The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that it is modifying its capacity-building approach from a static grantmaking program to a dynamic and responsive coaching and support system, with a focus on equity. Over the coming months, the foundation will be conducting outreach to nonprofits supported by its grant programs so that it better understands their capacity-building needs.

New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation in Concord has announced that it has entered a partnership with the Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation to increase the number of scholarships available to state residents. With a $250,000 grant from EBCF and matching gifts from New Hampshire families, NHCF expects to nearly double the number of scholarships it awards for short-term education and workforce training over the next three years. The program will focus on students who experience barriers to opportunity as well as those working to earn high-value credentials in the traditional trades, advanced manufacturing, financial services, health care, and information technology.

Ohio

The Dayton Foundation has announced the appointment of Jeanne Holihan as vice president of operations and Noreen Willhelm as a senior fellow in the Del Mar Encore Fellows Initiative. The foundation piloted the Encore Fellows initiative in 2016 as a way to match highly skilled older adults with area nonprofits working to address urgent problems in the greater Dayton region. Holihan, who previously served as a senior fellow, has an extensive background in financial and strategic planning as well as human resource experience. Willhelm has worked for nonprofits in the Dayton area for more than twenty-five years and is currently vice president of the board of the Montgomery County Arts and Cultural District.

Pennsylvania

The Philadelphia Foundation has announced Katherine Palozola as the 2018 recipient of the Brody Family Medical Trust Fund fellowship for medical research in incurable diseases. The fellowship will fund two years of Palozola's research at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine on the use of gene therapy to treat inherited blindness.

Tennessee

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee in Nashville has announced that retired U.S. District Judge Thomas Wiseman, Jr. and Tennessee Court of Appeals Judge Richard Dinkins were honored for their many years of work on school desegregation during the foundation's third annual Francis S. Guess Bridge to Equality Fund luncheon. Wiseman, who served as presiding judge in the long-running metro schools desegregation case, retired in 2013 as a U.S. district court judge after thirty-five years of service. Dinkins, who successfully represented the plaintiffs in the desegregation case, has served as a judge on the Tennessee Court of Appeals since 2008.

Vermont

The Vermont Community Foundation in Middlebury has announced that the Vermont Women's Fund, one of its component funds, has awarded $102,900 in grants to twelve organizations working to improve the economic security of women and girls in the state. This year's grants were funded in part through the Vermont Community Foundation's Giving Together program, which shares grant proposals with its fundholders and invites them to co-fund projects. Recipients include Capstone Community Action, the Governor's Institutes of Vermont, the Howard Center, and the John Graham Shelter.
