Arizona
The Tucson-based Community Foundation for Southern Arizona has announced that its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Alliance Fund has awarded a second year of funding to 12 organizations. Recipients of grants totaling $103,500 include Chicanos Por La Causa, Our Family Services, Southern Arizona Senior Pride, and Tucson LGBT Chamber of Commerce Foundation. In addition, the foundation released the fund’s 2022-24 Midyear Impact Report. Since 1999, the fund has awarded more than $1.2 million.
California
San Francisco Foundation has announced that Bob Friedman and David ibnAle have been appointed chair and vice chair of its board of trustees. Their two-year appointments are in effect until June 30, 2025.
The San Diego Foundation has announced grants totaling $650,000 in support of organizations working to expand access to culturally responsive and trauma-informed mental and behavioral health resources for local youth, children, and families. Recipients include Crisis House, Mending Matters, Promises2Kids, and United Women of East Africa.
Connecticut
The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven has announced the creation of the Thomas Smolak Scholarship Foundation Fund, which will provide financial assistance for at-risk youth, including free memberships at the New Haven YMCA Youth Center. Smolak, who spent much of his free time exercising and focusing on healthy eating, died in 2020 from complications associated with Parkinson’s disease. The fund was established at the foundation by his estate in 2022.
Florida
The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties has announced that it has met the $100,000 matching grant challenge launched by Shawn Donnelley in February during the foundation’s 10th annual founders luncheon. Donnelley created the challenge in honor of her mother, Margaret Donnelley, a lifelong philanthropist and mental health advocate. The matching funds will be equally shared by the foundation’s newly established Community Mental Health Fund, Mental Health America of Palm Beach County Endowment Fund, NAMI of Palm Beach County Endowment Fund, and Autism Project of Palm Beach County, Inc. Endowment Fund.
Maine
The Maine Community Foundation has awarded its Chet Jordan Leadership Awards, which are given annually to emerging leaders with the ability to turn a vision into reality and engage others to make lasting impacts on their community. The scholarships support postsecondary study in a certificate, two-year, or four-year undergraduate program through the University of Maine System, Maine Community College System, Maine Maritime Academy, or vocational and technical schools in the state.
Massachusetts
The Boston Foundation has announced $3.1 million in funding to 40 organizations under its new strategic approach, which focuses on four interconnected pathways—Nurturing Strong Beginnings, Building Economic Opportunity, Advancing Community Wealth, and Amplifying Community Leadership. The 24 organizations receiving grants in the Amplifying Community Leadership category comprise the first cohort of grantees of its Safety Net Grants program, which provides social service organizations that respond to essential needs of marginalized communities and vulnerable residents with $50,000 over two years in general operating support.
New York
Brooklyn Community Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $1.5 million from its Brooklyn Elders Fund in support of 14 local nonprofits. The fund supports the foundation’s Access to Benefits and Entitlements, Aging in Place, and Promoting Elders’ Rights funding areas. Recipients include Access Justice Brooklyn, Height and Hills, Breaking Ground, and the Doula Program.
South Carolina
The Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina (CCF) in North Charleston and Truist have announced a partnership and shared their strategy for future investment in the Lowcountry region. In March, CCF was awarded a $2.174 million grant from the Truist Charitable Fund, a donor-advised fund administered by the Winston-Salem Foundation. The grant directly supports and expands CCF’s Place-Based Impact Investing (PBII) and economic mobility grantmaking within the foundation’s nine-county service area. To that end, PBII will invest in businesses that achieve both a measurable financial return as well as a positive social impact.
Texas
Communities Foundation of Texas has announced the appointment of Wayne White as president and CEO, effective July 31. A longtime nonprofit leader, White most recently served as a senior executive at the American Cancer Society.
