Alabama

The Central Alabama Community Foundation in Montgomery has announced a strategic partnership with the Community Foundation of East Alabama, which will now be known as the East Alabama Community Foundation. The partnership aims to enhance philanthropic services and community impact across a broader region of the state, including the eastern counties of Lee, Chambers, Russell, and Tallapoosa.

California

The San Diego Foundation has announced the addition of four new members to its board of governors: Rafael Castellanos, Elizabeth Crisafi, Amina Sheik Mohamed, and Allen Young. An attorney, Castellanos is partner at Solomon Minton Cardinal Doyle & Smith LLP. Crisafi is former chief investment officer of the San Diego City Employees’ Retirement System. Sheik Mohamed is founding director of the UC San Diego Refugee Health Unit and is the recipient of several honors, including the 2024 James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award. And Young is manager of government affairs for Cox Communications.

Connecticut

The Day, a daily newspaper based in New London, has announced the addition of journalist Theresa Sullivan Barger, who will report on critical environmental and energy topics for its Imminent Horizons project. The project is funded in part by a $30,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut.

Michigan

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint has announced that Mount Morris Consolidated Schools has received $867,800 in grant funding for the enhancement of Ronald Batterbee Memorial Park through the Council of Michigan Foundations and Michigan Department of Natural Resources Spark Grant Program. The public-private partnership aims to broaden access to recreational spaces and programs for communities that have traditionally been underrepresented and under-resourced.

Minnesota

The Minneapolis Foundation has announced grants totaling $526,543 from the Fund for Safe Communities to 18 organizations working to prevent violence and foster resilience in local communities. Funded projects range from mentor-mentee programming to activities that promote wellness and trauma healing, arts and sports programs, and services for justice-involved individuals as they re-enter the community. Established in 2018, the Fund for Safe Communities supports efforts to address and prevent community violence, defined by the Centers for Disease Control as violence between unrelated individuals, generally outside the home. Recipients include American Indian OIC, Circle of Discipline, Creative Kuponya, and Hired.

Ohio

The City of Cincinnati’s Office of Environment and Sustainability, the Green Cincinnati Fund Advisory Committee, and Greater Cincinnati Foundation have announced the recipeints for the inaugural round of the Green Cincinnati Plan Seeds of Change Grant Program. Nineteen grassroots nonprofits were chosen to receive grants totaling $196,769, including B the Keeper, Brick Gardens, MyWhy, and the Being Project.

The Dayton Foundation has announced that it is a recipient of the 2024 Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships, a national award issued annually by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Council on Foundations. The award, now in its 12th year, honors grantmakers and public-sector collaborators who together create innovative, placed-based initiatives that have led to measurable benefits in housing and community development. The foundation was recognized for its Pathways to Homeownership Program, which was established to address the impact on affordable housing of the 2019 Memorial Day tornadoes in Dayton.

Pennsylvania

The Philadelphia Foundation has announced grants totaling more than $2.6 million in support of 101 nonprofit organizations providing services to populations living at or below the federal poverty level and/or historically marginalized communities in the greater Philadelphia region. Recipients include Elevate 215, Face to Face, Ardella’s House, and Project Libertad.

Wisconsin

The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region has announced that its Shawano Area Community Foundation affiliate received nearly $508,000 in gifts in 2023 and awarded grants totaling $428,870, including $37,000 from its Shawano Area Fund to 17 organizations and $227,500 in scholarships.
