Community Foundation Update (06/22/2024)
California
The San Diego Foundation (SDF) has announced the kickoff of the 2024 edition of Level Up with the San Diego Unified School District (SDU), marking the fourth year that top-tier summer enrichment programs and camps have been offered to district students tuition-free for families. In partnership with SDF, SDU offers summer programs to all district-enrolled students, from kindergarten through eighth grade. Activities include zoo camp, STEAM- and arts-based experiences, as well as museum and sports programs. This year’s program will provide 10,000 student experiences, with a focus on expanding summer opportunities for English learners, foster youth, students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, and students receiving special education services.
Connecticut
The Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut in New London has awarded a pair of two-year grants to organizations working to address the area’s affordable housing crisis, The Day reports. Funded by an anonymous donor, the grants include $105,765 to the Partnership for Strong Communities group, a Hartford-based organization that will explore the housing needs of Norwich, and $200,000 to the Access Community Action Agency to aid northeastern Connecticut families with home-ownership counseling and financial literacy workshops.
Minnesota
Fourth Generation, a giving circle hosted at the Minneapolis Foundation, has awarded grants totaling $90,000 to six local organizations. The recipients include 180 Degrees, Lived Experience Advocacy Network, Onward Eden Prairie, Phumulani Minnesota African Women Against Violence, the Bridge for Youth, and United Renters for Justice.
New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation has announced Jennifer Horgan, policy director for the New Hampshire Senate Democratic Caucus, as the 2024 recipient of its Caroline and Martin Gross Fellowship. The fellowship will enable Horgan to attend an intensive, three-week program this summer with public servants from around the world to share her experiences and learn how others are navigating sharpened partisan challenges as they develop policies and programs to benefit the public.
New Jersey
The Community Foundation of South Jersey in Haddonfield has announced the appointment of Bill Wells to its board of directors. Wells is a vice president for regional commercial banking at TD Bank.
Ohio
The Columbus Foundation has announced the 13 students selected for its 2024 Summer Fellowship Program. Launched in 2010, the 10-week program provides college students, recent college graduates, and graduate students experience in the nonprofit sector, with each fellow being placed with a nonprofit in Franklin County. Summer fellows, who receive a stipend for their work, support a project chosen by their host, helping to build the organizational capacity of local nonprofits.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced 20 grants totaling $1.3 million to help address the state’s opioid crisis. Through a public-private partnership between the foundation and the state’s Office of Health and Human Services, grants funded through the state’s Opioid Settlement Agreement will help individuals and families affected by substance use or opioid use or who are at risk of an overdose. Recipients include Access to Recovery, Community Care Alliance, Rhode Island Hospital, and Thundermist Health Center.
South Carolina
Women in Philanthropy, a giving circle of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, awarded grants totaling $132,000 to eight Beaufort County nonprofits. Recipients include Hopeful Horizons, Spirit of Sebastian, Heroes on Horseback, and the Lowcountry Autism Foundation.
West Virginia
The Parkersburg Area Community Foundation has announced 10 grants totaling nearly $112,000 through five funds managed by the foundation. Recipients include Discover the Real West Virginia Foundation, Jackson County Public Library, Savannah’s Closet, and Vets 4 Vets Jackson County.
