Community Foundation Update (07/27/2024)
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced the three awardees in the inaugural grant round of its Policy Project. Funded in part by the Melody S. Robidoux Fund, the program helps recipients improve their community by increasing their public policy and public advocacy efforts over the course of three years. The recipients are the Children’s Action Alliance, Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project, and SW Center for Economic Integrity.
California
The San Diego Foundation has announced the launch of its Community Impact Partners program, which taps local retirees to leverage their expertise and experience to address local issues. Funded by the Del Mar Healthcare Fund, the SDF Community Impact Partners program will match retired experts with high-impact community projects through the work of part-time partners.
Florida
The Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties announced the establishment of a fund on behalf of the Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County (CFSPBC), a nonprofit social service organization working to strengthen individuals and families through mental health services and education. In 2022, the foundation seeded the Center for Family Services Fund with a $1 million gift from Charlie and Tammy Pompea, longtime supporters of CFSPBC.
Indiana
The Indianapolis-based Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) has announced its 2024 cohort for its Stronger Partners Brighter Futures program. CICF and members of the Central Indiana Philanthropic Collaborative host the nine-month program, which is administered by Cape Fletcher Associates. The cohort includes Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity, IYG, Indianapolis Men’s Chorus, Kids Dance Outreach, and the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.
Michigan
The Midland Area Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Ali Huntoon, Kristin Stehouwer, and Noah Kent to its board of trustees. Huntoon is co-founder and director of HR and talent acquisition at Allied HR Solutions. Kent is director of technology and auditorium services at Meridian Public Schools. And Stehouwer is academic vice president and provost for Northwood University.
Nebraska
The Omaha Community Foundation has announced that its Omaha Venture Group (OVG) has awarded grants totaling $29,000 to four nonprofits—one for each of OVG’s four core focus areas. Recipients include Youth and Greater Good, It’s All About Employment, North Omaha Community Partnership, and Radio Talking Book Service. Since 2002, OVG has awarded more than $700,000 to 174 area nonprofits.
New York
The Central New York Community Foundation in Syracuse has announced that it will invest an additional $1 million toward childhood lead poisoning prevention through its LeadSafeCNY initiative. Established in 2018, the LeadSafeCNY initiative initially aimed to invest at least $2 million to address the region’s high childhood lead poisoning rates. The foundation surpassed that amount, having already invested $2.6 million as of June 2024, largely focused on Syracuse city census tracts where lead poisoning rates are higher and residents report poor housing conditions.
Pennsylvania
The Erie Community Foundation has announced that its Erie Women’s Fund awarded a $100,000 grant to the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) in support of its Stronger Women — Stronger Erie Families initiative. USCRI Erie will create Strong Women — Stronger Erie Families, a holistic gender equity project targeting newly arrived refugee women, to make a larger impact on refugee families, local schools, and surrounding neighborhoods.
Wisconsin
The Greater Milwaukee Foundation (GMF) has announced that Cream City Foundation has joined the community foundation as a supporting organization—a move designed to enhance future growth, sustainability, and impact in the LGBTQ+ community it serves. In this specialized community foundation structure, Cream City Foundation will maintain an independent board and decision-making power while benefitting from the investment expertise, administrative support and regional reach of GMF.
