Community Foundation Update (08/22/20)
Alabama
The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham has awarded eleven grants totaling $45,000 to local nonprofits through its LGBTQ Fund. Since its inception in 2016, the fund has provided more than $145,000 in support of programs in Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount, and Walker counties. Grant recipients include AIDS Alabama, the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center, the Birmingham Black Repertory Theatre, and the Invisible Histories Project.
California
The Santa Barbara Foundation, in partnership with the County of Santa Barbara, has announced the launch of the Santa Barbara Better Together Fund Small Business Grant Program. Established in March as a committee-advised fund with an initial $500,000 donation from Deckers Brands, the fund supports local businesses struggling to survive the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic and will be accepting applications through August 31 for grants of up to $7,500 to qualifying small businesses as they reopen and adapt to operating under the new public health guidelines.
The Orange County Community Foundation in Newport Beach has announced a second round of relief grants from the OC Arts and Culture Resilience Fund to nineteen Orange County arts organizations and thirty local artists. The grants are in addition to the one-time grants of $750 awarded to forty artists on July 29. In this funding round, Orange County arts organizations received grants ranging from $1,000 to $14,000.
Colorado
The Community Foundation Boulder County has announced that it is creating a video highlighting the ways members of the community have come together to support each other during the pandemic. The foundation is asking residents to submit videos that capture acts of service, kindness, community, and learning for consideration in the compilation and will provide an honorarium to individuals whose footage is used in the final video, which will be made shareable on social media channels and used in the foundation's year-end fundraising efforts. The deadline to submit a video is close of business on August 31.
Louisiana
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced grants totaling $194,000 to hospitality service workers who have lost jobs or income as a result of the pandemic. Through the Louisiana Service & Hospitality Family Assistance Program, grants of $1,000 were awarded to a hundred and ninety-four bar, hotel, restaurant, catering, and event-planning staff. According to the foundation, the average annual income of the recipients is $28,600 a year.
Maine
Upstart Maine will receive two grants totaling $59,500 to assist ten small businesses in the Bangor region and beyond, MaineBiz reports. In addition to a $34,500 rural business development grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the organization received a $25,000 "start up, scale up" grant from the Maine Community Foundation.
Minnesota
The Minneapolis Foundation has announced that the 154-year-old WCA Foundation is becoming one of its "Signature Funds" and will transition its operations and grantmaking to the foundation. The two organizations have been working together to ensure a seamless transition for grant applicants, and the WCA Foundation expects to open its fall grant cycle, as scheduled, on September 1. The transition will enable the foundation to substantially reduce its administrative costs and dedicate significantly more resources to its community grantmaking.
Oklahoma
The Oklahoma City Community Foundation has announced that it is awarding more than $5.2 million in endowment fund distributions to three hundred and sixty-five nonprofits in central Oklahoma. In addition to increasing the average grant amount, the foundation is distributing the grants months earlier than usual to help with current fundraising and cash flow needs arising from the COVID pandemic.
Pennsylvania
The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that its Dietrich Foundation Greenville, PA Fund has awarded $45,940 to Greenville-area organizations this year, a year-over-year increase of more than $10,000. Grant recipients include the Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern OH, the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Greenville Little League, and First Baptist Church.
Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Foundation has announced grants totaling $290,000 through its Newport County Fund. Recipients include Child & Family, Meals on Wheels, the James L. Maher Center, and Lucy's Hearth.
South Carolina
The Community Foundation of the Lowcountry in Hilton Head has named Scott Wierman as its next president and CEO, effective January 1, 2021. Wierman will continue to serve as president of the Winston-Salem Foundation through the holidays.
Vermont
The Vermont Community Foundation has announced that its Women's Fund has launched a 100-for-100 Campaign, an initiative to celebrate the centennial anniversary of women's voting rights, and will finance a special round of grantmaking associated with the campaign in the fall, with grants targeting Vermont nonprofits serving women and girls at risk of eviction, losing child care or their health insurance, food insecurity, and other challenges associated with the pandemic. The campaign will build on the $292,000 in grants the fund awarded in April to twenty-four nonprofits across the state working to address the social and economic impacts of COVID-19.
