Community Foundation Update (09/25/2021)
Arizona
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona in Tucson has announced a grant of $25,000 in support of COVID-19 relief to the Sunnyside Foundation, a fiscal agent of the COVID Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health Project, and Santa Cruz Training Programs. The grant will enable the groups to provide essential COVID-related services through vaccination clinics and targeted vaccination access to populations that have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. To that end, the funding will be used to incentivize and support community messengers who will be recruited and work through September 2022 to disseminate accurate and culturally relevant messages.
California
The San Francisco Foundation has announced the appointment of Rehana Abbas as its chief philanthropy officer, effective September 30. Abbas most recently served in a similar role at the Oakland Museum of California and previously served as the senior director of individual giving at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
New York
The Community Foundation of Otsego County in Springfield Center has announced that it has surpassed its goal of raising $2 million to fund a new philanthropic community organization. According to the foundation, the amount raised is sufficient for its basic plan, which includes awarding another $200,000 in grants during 2021.
Pennsylvania
The Chester County Community Foundation in West Chester has announced a grant of $5,000 to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in support of research to find a cure for brain cancer. Awarded through the Stanley's Dream Foundation, established by Donna and Stanley Edwards in memory of their son, Stanley, Jr., who passed away from brain cancer in 2002, the gift is the fifteenth donation the couple has made to CHOP. They have awarded more than $110,000 to the hospital, which named a room in Stanley's honor.
Vermont
The Walter Cerf Community Fund, a component fund of the Vermont Community Foundation, has announced grants totaling $52,461 to twenty organizations in its 2021 competitive grants round, in addition to the $97,000 in grants awarded to twenty-four organizations in April. The latest recipients include the Addison County Humane Society, the Common Ground Center, Middlebury Actors Workshop, and the Vermont Folklife Center.
Washington, D.C.
The Greater Washington Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Darcelle Wilson as its senior director for Prince George's County. She will succeed Amina Anderson.
Wisconsin
The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has announced ThriveOn Small Business Loans totaling $780,000 to seventeen small businesses in Milwaukee. The low-interest loans, ranging from $25,000 to $50,000, are expected to create or re-establish approximately forty jobs. Nearly 80 percent of the businesses are located in the Halyard Park, Harambee, and Brewers Hill neighborhoods associated with the ThriveOn Collaboration, and all are owned by people of color.
